Making a photo mosaic comes down to one question, asked thousands of times over: which of your photos belongs in this exact spot? You can answer it by hand, placing tiles one at a time in an image editor, or let dedicated software or a service answer it for you. The work underneath is the same, and it breaks into a handful of steps.
What You Need
- A target image. The picture you want to recreate. High-contrast images with clear shapes work best, which is why portraits, pets, and landscapes are popular choices.
- Tile photos. The smaller images that fill the grid. You’ll want at least 300, and ideally 500 or more. The more variety in color and subject, the better the result. (See How Many Photos Do You Need? for the detail.)
- Software or a service. Something to do the matching and assembly.
The Process
1. Choose Your Target Image
Not every photo makes a good target. The best ones have:
- Strong contrast. Clear differences between light and dark help the picture read from a distance.
- Simple composition. A single subject against a fairly clean background beats a busy scene.
- Enough resolution. The target doesn’t need to be huge, just sharp enough to define the grid cleanly.
The usual pitfalls: very dark photos (too little color variation to match against), busy backgrounds (the mosaic turns noisy), and low-contrast images (the subject never stands out).
2. Prepare Your Tile Library
Your tile photos are the raw material. A few things worth weighing:
- Color diversity. The library needs colors from across the spectrum. If everything was shot indoors under warm light, you’ll have no blues or greens, and the algorithm will struggle with sky and foliage.
- Aspect ratio. Most systems crop tiles to a uniform shape, usually square or 4:3, so anything important near the edges can get clipped.
- Quality over quantity. Blurry, dark, or near-identical photos add noise without adding value. Good software weeds out duplicates on its own.
3. Set the Grid
The grid decides how many tiles your mosaic holds, and it’s the biggest quality tradeoff you’ll make.

Bigger grids give you a more detailed target image, but they need more tile photos to avoid heavy repetition.
4. Color Matching
This is the heart of the process. The software reads each cell’s color and finds the closest tile in your library. How well it does that varies enormously between tools:
- Basic matching compares average RGB color only. Fast, but flat-looking, because it ignores the texture and brightness inside each cell.
- Advanced matching works in perceptually uniform color spaces (CIE Lab, CIE94), where mathematical distance lines up with how we actually see color. It may also weigh brightness gradients and texture.
- Constraint-based matching layers rules on top: a cap on how often a tile repeats, a minimum gap between identical tiles, and continuity along the edges of neighboring cells.
5. Rendering
Once every cell has its tile, the mosaic gets rendered out, and resolution is what matters here:
- Screen viewing: 4,000 to 8,000px on the long side is usually plenty.
- Poster printing (18x24" or A2): 8,000 to 12,000px minimum for crisp tiles.
- Large format (24x36" or A1): 12,000px and up.
At print resolution, a high-quality mosaic can easily run past 100 megapixels.

Tips for Better Results
- Shoot for color variety. Before you start collecting, think about the colors your target needs. A sunset portrait wants warm oranges and reds; a beach scene wants blues and whites.
- Include “filler” photos. Solid-color or texture-heavy shots, close-ups of grass, sky, or fabric, help fill uniform areas without repeating recognizable faces.
- Test at more than one distance. A good mosaic reads as the target from across the room and breaks into individual photos up close. If it only works at one distance, something is off.
- Print bigger than you think. Mosaics reward size. At poster scale you get both the macro picture and the micro detail. At postcard scale, the whole effect collapses.
